Outreach at Kits
At Kits we believe that following Jesus means pursuing the Kingdom of God through things like radical hospitality, doing justice, and engaging in mutually transformational relationships all informed by the gospel. Kitsilano Christian Community is part of a long church tradition that aims to fulfil this calling. We work this out in a variety of ways:
A more recent initiative at Kits is called our Neighborhood Action Team (NAT). The members of this group seek to find new ways for our church to be involved in our neighborhood here in Kitsilano and also for members who do not live in Kitsilano to be active in their own neighborhoods. One result coming out of the NAT group is the establishment of the Pine Street Community Garden, an on-site community garden that will share its produce with community organizations that serve marginalized populations. For further info on the community garden click here.
Kits Church is involved in our local and global community in the following ways:
* Financial and practical support for ministries in our community
o Homestart - providing everything needed to set up a home
o REED (Resist Exploitation Embrace Dignity) -standing with trafficked persons and against exploitation.
o Just Work - an initiative for those with multiple barriers to the traditional work place.
o A local school lunch program.
o Keats Camps
o Shalom Seekers - a hub for Christian community development in Metro Vancouver. We became supporters of Shalom Seekers through our interest in supporting affordable housing initiatives in Vancouver.
o Out of the Cold - providing hot meals and conversation to those who need it. Home groups from Kits Church prepare and serve a meal one Thursday per month at the Grandview Calvary Baptist Church Out of the Cold program.
o Christmas benevolence - Gifts at Christmas to help those in need celebrate the holiday.
* Financial support to ministries around the globe
o David and Susannah Nacho serving with CBM
o The ACTS Aid Station in Uganda and the work of ACTS among people in Uganda living with HIV/AIDS.
o The Brenda Johnston Fund - helping people in our congregation go on short-term mission trips.
As a community, we also stand behind the work of many of our members who reach out to others locally and internationally. For example, Kits Christian Community is the home base for many who have followed their own calls to
* use their art skills to set up a micro-business ceramic studio in Africa
* serve as a doctor and a cook with Mercy Ships International
* work for a year at an orphanage in Ipoderac, Mexico
* spend the summer with Vancouver-area youth at Keats Camps
* help college students in Kazahkstan practice their English and learn about Christianity
* put their nursing skills and experience to work in Kenya
* setting up a rural community Aid Station and providing health care in Uganda
