A People of Faith

February 4, 2018
00:00-06:22 Scripture, Hebrews 11.
06:22-27:52 Sermon, Luke Schroeder.
Theme: Our text is often referenced as the “Great Hall of Faith”, and it is a fitting description as we have a lot to learn from those who went before us. We will look at the big picture message of this text to learn two things: (1) Our faith is in continuity with those who went before us, and (2) our faith is connected to Jesus. How we live by faith in the present day is in continuity with those who went before us, and is founded on Jesus Christ’s faithfulness to us. What an amazing God we worship, Jesus, the Perfecter of our faith!

00:00-03:08 Scripture, Genesis 26:12-24, Colossians 3:12-17
03:14-40:06 Sermon, Jeremy Bell
Theme: The world and indeed human existence, has always been directly tied to the availability of water. Aridity in all its forms: drought, erosion and habitat loss have all contributed to the compromise of safe, secure and clean water. The concern over water does not just exist in the Genesis 26 passage. Cities like Cape Town and Rome are literally running out of water as we meet today. Our text today starts with the death of Abraham and follows his son Isaac ‘s struggle for survival. We will contrast the struggle in Genesis 26 with Jesus’ offer of “living water” in John 4 :7 - 15. Genesis 26 helps us to reflect on the “wells” in our own lives; those places where we are nourished, those places where the wells have been filled in and blocked, by others and sometimes even by ourselves.

The season of Epiphany which is traditionally celebrated by the Christian church as the visit of the Magi worshiping the Christ child is full of wonderful and almost competing themes. There is the theme of wisdom and there is the theme of worship. There is the notion that the Magi are gentiles and that they are recognizing the Christ child for the first time which in itself is a comment on inclusion, as Gentiles were not embracing the family of faiths. The theme we will embrace this morning is that root meaning of the word epiphany which is to be revealed... More than that, epiphany also carries with it the sense of being surprised and in that surprise and wonder that the epiphany of meeting Christ both for the first time and each day, is to experience joy over and over again.
