02:19-24:55 Sermon, Ellis Andre.
Summary: : A man by the name of Simon of Cyrene was caught up in the mob accompanying Jesus to Golgotha and conscripted to carry the cross of Jesus. There is good reason to believe that this changed his life forever.
00:00-04:16 Scripture, Joshua 2
04:16-37:46 Sermon, Kelly Dycavinu, "Selling Ourselves Short"
Themes: Remembering who we are in light of who God is
Imagery: stones- the walls of Jericho, throwing stones (Achan, adulterous woman), the monument of stones (Josh 4: 1-3, 21-24)
Conclusion/Summary:
Stones have provided a source of imagery throughout these Scriptures. First was the image of using stones to build walls. In a sense to condemn ourselves by trapping ourselves into being or living a certain way that is not what God intended for us. Rahab, as a prostitute, sold herself short. We too may sell ourselves short… whether it is a specific area of sin or a character issue where we hang on to our old ways. Remember, in Christ we are a new creation, the old is gone and the new has come and there is no now condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Second was the image of throwing stones and condemning others. Coming back to the prostitutes in my neighbourhood, I may not be able to imagine how they could ever get out of their situation, but expectation or assumption that they can’t is condemning. I encourage us to not only know the freedom God extends to each one of us personally, but to also have the attitude of Christ and extend that freedom to others around us—even in the most unimaginable situations, like Rahab’s, or perhaps some of the people around us that we think may never change.
Third, as an alternative to building walls or throwing stones, God shows us another alternative—the monument of stones. It’s a call to remember what God has done in our lives and in the lives of those around us. If we forget these stories, we forget who we are and why we are here… and that too is selling ourselves short.
